Located on the main road from the A303 towards Langport is the pub, restaurant and accommodation provided by The Lime Kiln Inn.
Previously it was successfully run as a private concern but is now under the control of Butcombe Breweries.
Our evening started with a rather cool reception from the barman but he soon mellowed and even smiled.
We reserved a table but could not be seated in the restaurant area as it was full. Probably something to do with it being Wednesday and food prices attracted a 25% discount that day.
Our order was taken by Rachael who was delightful. Unfortunately, my first choice of pie was off menu so I opted for the chicken burger at £13.95. Others selected fish and chips, £16.95, and 6oz burger at £14.95. Prices were a little steep for pub meals but, hey, we might be in for a near fine dining experience. No so.
Whilst the quality of the fish was satisfactory, the chips and accompliments were less desirable. The burgers were ok but not flavoursome.
Drink prices were likewise a little over the top.
250ml of Shiraz was £8.15, a white wine spritzer £8.85 and a half of Thatchers Haze was £2.55.
Our total bill for four people was £137.61, including a 10% voluntary service charge, but was discounted down to £120.18 because of the Wednesday promotion.
As a further indication of over pricing consider the Christmas Day menu at £75.95 per person without a single alcoholic drink to celebrate the occasion. What cost do you estimate for a family of four? Phew!

It has become expensive to eat out! People will start to say ‘no’ to the voluntary service charge!
